

- The most important change that you should make to your car is to
convert the rear-end to posi-traction. This is accomplished by welding
the spider gear in most cars, others require more work. Every car varies but
do it. You will last longer.
- Headers require gaskets. Some drivers don't install gaskets when making
modifications like headers through the hood. This lets excessive heat burn up the plug wires
before the derby is over.
- Fresh oil and a new oil filter are a must. An engine with fresh
oil and a new filter will run much cooler and last longer than one with old oil and
a blocked filter. We also swear by Slick 50. I have not found an additive that
works like this stuff.
- Make sure your transmission doesn't leak anywhere. If it does, repair
it. I also like to loop the transmission lines before entering the
radiator. You can run without water but you can't without transmission fluid
and a solid front-end hit will cause the radiator to leak.
- Transmission linkage: If you are going to run the stock linkage, weld a
washer on the end of each connection of the shift linkage, nearest the
firewall and the transmission. This helps to prevent the
linkage from being pulled apart. I have also found that replacing the
cotter pin with coat-hanger wire and wrapping it on the shifter increases your
chance for longevity. You can also upgrade to an aftermarket
shifter. Look back here in the future for recommendations.
- Fan Blades: Try a plastic aftermarket fan blade. 6 blade fans are
available at most
speed shops. There are many advantages to using
the plastic blade but the biggest is that it won't destroy the radiator when
the fan and radiator smash together. Check back for recommendations in the
